We finally broke ground on the timber frame cabin this week. This is the first hole of total of nine for the pier/piles. Each hole is at least 18″ in diameter and 18 inches deep. We typically encountered 6-8 inches of dark loose foil followed my a caliche clay/limestone mix. After hand digging this first hole we decided to rent an auger. The auger provided mixed results. We could only get a 12″ bit so once we dug out the center we had to scrape out the sides a couple of inches. The auger also didn’t handle tree roots or very large rocks very well so there was still plenty of work to do with post hole digger and shovel.
Here’s a time lapse to the week.
Do the Police know that Sheryl has disappeared down the hole?
We also found the post hole digger to be difficult. we found the Best was a small curved spade made of very thick metal and steel handle. Only drawback was that it was considerably heavier than the post hole cutter, oh and of course, we usually resorted to bending down to remove the debris.
I see that the Chickens were also involved!
