I was inspired by this custom made door on an earth sheltered house I toured while in Montana this past summer. You can see it’s a pretty sturdy. It’s about six inches thick. There was something about the heft that I found appealing. The cabin already has lot of over-sized elements so why not the front door too?
Jean and I were really fortunate to find a couple of leaded glass windows at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore that fit the door dimensions perfectly. I also decided to give the door a little arch to add some drama. Because when you only have three doors in your house they need a little drama.
|It turned out alright. The open triangle sections will function as transoms. I’ll put a screened vent on the outside and two small triangle shaped doors on the inside to provide ventilation in lieu of a screen door|
Here’s a video about the build:

Love it, love it, love it!
Roof, Walls, windows and now door — Kevin McCleod of "grand Designs" would be proud of you making it weather proof.
